Juance is a photo-document chronicling the downtown peninsula of Halifax, Nova Scotia in the morning hours after the devastating landfall of Hurricane Juan on September 29, 2003. Described as the worst storm to hit the region since 1893, the Category 2 hurricane left millions of felled trees and damaged countless homes. It remains a testament to the conflicted perceptions of nature in face with the stark and difficult environment of a landscape that juts out into the cold, Northern Atlantic. At no physical point in Nova Scotia is someone more than 67 km from the ocean, a  vulnerability to global climate change that is made more stark when one considers the importance of the seas to the culture and landscape of this “sea bound coast”.
